RS125

2006 Aprilia RS125.
This was the first of the new shape in what is to be one of the last production two stroke motorcycles. Very little is left to be improved on these pocket rockets. They are bewitching little machines that chatter away to you in an animated way that lets you become the organic, living breathing part of a perfectly balanced machine. The original incarnation of the machine was developed by none other than a famous Dutch engineer in the motorcycle racing world, Jan Theil, with years of experience in two stroke racing, making his mark with the Jamathi 50cc race bikes.
A stock RS125, with only the minor 'factory' mods completed is capable of some impressive achievements. With the bike only weighing in at a tiny 124KG when fully wet, and 33bhp at the crank from the Austrian build Rotax 122 motor, the 1/4mile could be achieved in just under 16 seconds. Older RS125's (pre 98 i think) had the Rotax 123 motor, which had a larger carb and was even more powerful than the 122. But this bike is not about insane acceleration or massive top speed, even though it could reach a respectable 165kph. What this bike built to do, which it has proved championship after another, is to win races, with a novelty reflecting this being a built in lap timer in the dash. It wins races by being one of the nimblest little bikes in the world. The machine still commanded respect, but you could feel her start to turn the corner before you had even gotten ready.
The brakes are really really big, considering the weight of the bike. Pre 06 models had an almost identical setup, with the Post 06 bikes having a radially mounted front four pot calliper, instead of your conventional type mounting. The front brakes consisted of a 330mm floating disk with a radially mounted four pot calliper with braided lines stock. The rear is a 220mm disk with a two pot calliper and braided lines stock. Excellent feel was kept through this braking system. The added bonus of such a ridiculous disk on the front was the ease in which the rear wheel could be lifted off the ground!
The Rotax 122 motor is a 124.8cc displacement unit, with a 53.98mm bore, 28mm Delortto carburettor with oil feed, a solenoid controlled power valve via the RAVE unit, 6 speed gearbox and an electrical start. The 06 bikes onwards came out with beautiful 17" 6 Y spoke rims for the front, and 17" 5 Y spoke rims for the rear. Front suspension is USD 40mm.
Ill add more later.
